This is Brooke DePinto, the principal of Harkers Island Elementary School calling with some important information for the coming week. The weekly All Call is sent out to Harkers Island families every Sunday evening and the script for the call can be located on our school website and Facebook page.
Upcoming Dates to Note:

Wednesday, September 2nd - BOG Testing (3rd Grade)
Thursday, September 3rd - Volunteer Training (5:30), PTO Meeting (6:00)
Friday, September 4th - College Colors Spirit Day
Monday, September 7th - Labor Day Holiday (NO SCHOOL)
Online Paperwork Process: The online forms process has been extended until September 18 and we hope to have 100% of our students with completed paperwork. We've made it to 60% complete. This online system allows you to update phone numbers, addresses, and emergency contacts, and sign off on medical, photo, and technology agreements - all online. One important note: you'll need your own Parent Portal account. You can find the link to complete this process on the CCPS or HIES websites. If you need a device, internet access or some help with the process please come to the school between 8:00 and 4:00 and we will be glad to help you! Any class that has 100% completion by next Thursday, September 3 will earn freeze pops and 10 minutes extra recess on Friday!
Technology Updates: Please note that students will not be issued a school device until the Technology Use Agreement form is signed online and the yearly $20 (Grades 3-5 only) technology fee has been paid. You can pay any fees by sending/bringing in cash or check. Thank you for your understanding!
PTO Meeting: Our first PTO meeting is on Thursday, September 3 at 6 PM. The PTO is a fantastic group who does so much to support our school, and they need your help! All families are welcome and encouraged to join!
Volunteer Training: We will have volunteer training at 5:30 PM on Thursday, for anyone who has not been trained. If you just want to accompany your child on a field trip or eat lunch with them, you do not need to be trained. If you want to volunteer directly with groups of students other than your own, this training is for you! You will complete the background check application as part of the training. Come for volunteer training and stay for PTO!
Picture Day: Picture Day will be Friday, September 18. Information will be coming home in student folders next week and all students will take individual and class pictures. If you want to purchase the class picture, money is due prior to picture day. If you only want individual pictures, you can wait until you get the proof to decide.
National College Colors Day: Friday, September 4 is National College Colors Day! We will have our first spirit day to celebrate and invite all of our students to wear their favorite college colors and attire.
Calendar Change: There is an important calendar change for HIES only! We will have an Early Release Day on Friday, December 4 to prepare for the Decoy Festival. The Early Release Day on the district calendar for Thursday, October 1 will now be a full school day for HIES students.
BOG Testing: Our third grade students will be taking their Beginning of Grade Reading test on Wednesday, September 2. There is nothing to do to prepare for this test. We just encourage our 3rd graders to get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast and try their best! This assessment is not used for a grade, but gives our teachers valuable information on how to plan their instruction.
HIES Merchandise: HIES merch is for sale through the PTO through Monday, August 31! Get more information online or in your child's paperwork folder to get your merch ordered for the year!
