Principal's Corner

Al Roberson, Principal

Hello everyone, this is me! I just want you to know how honored I am to be the principal at Harkers Island Elementary School. My personal mission in my career has always been and will always be to make learning fun and exciting. At HIES, we will work hard to maintain positive relationships between staff and students, care about each other in all conditions, celebrate our successes, and make school something to look forward to, not dread.

I was born and raised in a small town in Pitt Co., NC called Bethel. I graduated from North Pitt High School with honors and attended Elon College as a NC Teaching Fellow. There, I was fortunate enough to practice teaching in England for a semester before starting my official career as a 4th grade teacher in Alamance County. I moved to Carteret County in 1996 and taught Math and Science for many years at Morehead City Middle School. Prior to achieving my masters degree in School Administration at East Carolina University, I also spent some time teaching social studies and PE at the middle school level and coached a variety of sports at the middle and high school levels. I then served the students of Carteret County as Assistant Principal at WCHS and Principal of MCMS before taking the helm at HIES. I also serve at the Director of Athletics for Carteret County Schools.

My wife, Pam, works at ECHS and we have 3 children, Sydney (14), Chase (11), and Brooks (6). We also have two crazy boxers named Otis and Luna. I enjoy hunting, fishing, watching my kids play sports, and being the principal at HIES. I hope to serve our students for many more years to come. Please reach out if I can help in any way!
