Harkers Island Elementary is known for its excellence in education.  From 1923-1957 Harkers Island Elementary was located just down the road.  At that time it housed a grammer school, high school, and a teacherage to house prospective teachers who wanted to come to Harkers Island and teach.   In 1949, all of the high school students began attending Smyrna Consolidated School, which later became part of East Carteret High School.  By the early 1950s the classes were growing and the need for a bigger space was needed.  In 1957, Harkers Island Elementary moved to its present location.

Harkers Island Elementary has a rich history that continues the traditions that were established in 1923.
